Commitments scare people – in the personal and in the
professional sphere. But it is one of the keys to
success. Every commitment has to be honored. This is a very important part of
life and of the business world. When you keep your word and honor your
commitments, you come across as a person of integrity and with a strong sense
of responsibility. So think things through properly and deeply before you
commit –do not promise anything if you have any doubts at all about delivering
on that promise. Commit only when you know you can and will deliver, when you
will keep your promise and maintain your respect and integrity.
It might help you to go through these three steps
before you commit to anything:
First
and foremost, check if you are ready for the task of committing. It is not an
easy thing to do – it requires time, energy, concentration. It requires you to
make some sacrifices, make changes in your life, routine, daily schedules. You
may feel you are ready but, stop a while and assess the situation objectively
and practically. Ensure that you are ready in all respects before you commit.
What is necessary to
honor the commitment
Secondly,
see if you actually have what is necessary to honor the commitment. You might
have the intent, integrity and sense of responsibility, but do you have the
time required to see it through? If you have a lot of other things taking up
your time, you may not be able to do this properly. Check your calendar and see
if you have time and energy to fulfill this task.
The
third and final factor you need to take into consideration is to see if
you have all the required material resources to meet your commitments on this
task. Be honest, be practical. Do you have everything you need –funds,
personnel, location, equipment, raw material or transportation, the requisite
licenses and permits? Go ahead and promise only if everything is in place.
Otherwise do not commit now.
Your
reputation depends on your keeping your word. So commit with care and thought
and remember to honor these commitments at any cost.
